Obituary

Cynthia Joyce Spies Scannell's life ended on April 27, 2022. Cynthia was born on April 5, 1928 in Mt. Kisco, NY, the second child of Louise M. and Arthur J. Spies. Cynthia met Robert Thomas Scannell, Jr. when he almost ran her over with a delivery truck when she was sledding. They married on January 27, 1951, while Tom was on leave from the Navy, honeymooning in NYC where they saw Sonja Henie skate.

She received her B.A. from Buffalo State and her Master's from Western Conn. State College. She was an art teacher at Fishkill Plains until her retirement in 1983. As a Mom, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, "Grammie" loved her family deeply. She always had a hug, a cuddle, a backrub, or a hand upon your cheek whenever they were needed. She taught us how to walk on the ceiling; let us sail boats in puddles in the driveway during storms; showed us how to short-sheet our siblings beds, and felt a dunking of one's face in tomato soup, or a spatula of mashed potatoes on the nose were funny (and they were). She had a sharp wit loaded with colorful sarcasm. Her sense of humor and her joy in life will be greatly missed.

Cynthia was preceded in death by the love of her life, Robert Thomas "Tom" Scannell, Jr.; her parents, Louise M. D'estamp Spies and Arthur J. Spies; her sister Louise Maples, as well as her brothers in law and a niece and nephew. She is survived by her children, Deborah A. Scannell, Linda J. Bailey (Chris), Pamela J. Pedlow (Chris), and Robert Thomas Scannell III (Patricia); grandchildren, Amanda Scannell Bennett (Keith), Richard (Brienne) and Patrick (Stacey) Bailey, Margareth (Dylan) Pedlow Fleming and Cooper and Luke Scannell; as well as her great grandchildren, Kelsey Bennett, Connor and Julia Bailey, Vivienne Bailey, and William and Emma Fleming; and her sister-in-law, Harriet Morgan; nieces Susan and Nancy Maples; and nephews Craig and Bruce Morgan. A viewing will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 6-8pm at McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Jct. Graveside service will be at 10am on May 14, 2022 at Fishkill Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the East Fishkill Historical Society may be made in honor of Cynthia.
