David
Simons
February 3, 1945 – July 16, 2025
STORMVILLE - David George Simons, 80, an area resident since 1968, died peacefully with his loving wife by his side on July 16, 2025 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born on February 3, 1945 in New York City, Dave was the son of the late Cyril and Ada (Rankin) Simons. He graduated from Maritime High School in New York and attended Dutchess Community College. He proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Dave retired in 2005 as a Chief Lineman-high voltage after almost 40 years with ConEdison. He was a parishioner at St. Denis Church where he had served as Eucharistic Minister.
An avid fan of sports, Dave coached his children's softball, baseball, and soccer teams and was lovingly referred to as "Papa Smurf" at his daughters' softball games. He also served as referee at his sons' hockey games, and travelled all over the North East and half way across the country to see his grandchildren compete. He was their #1 Fan. He played softball his entire life, and belonged to many local leagues over the years. Dave was a member of the Mid-Hudson Radio Control Society and the Stormville Radio Control Club. He will be remembered as an avid golfer who also loved anything military especially boats and planes, and was often heard singing the "Yellow Submarine" song by the Beatles. More than anything, he loved to spend time with his family and often could be found at family game night playing all sorts of hysterical games. He loved people in general and never thought of anyone as a stranger. Above all else, he will be remembered for his big heart, sense of humor, his "Dad" jokes, and his love for his family.
On June 29, 1968 at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers, he married the love of his life, Barbara (Thal) Simons, who survives at home. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Lt Col David G. Simons, Jr. (Frances) of Paris, France, Christopher Simons (Jessica) of Olive Branch, MS, Tamar Montross (SMSgt JP Montross, US Air Force Retired) of Beacon, and Elizabeth Credo (Steven) of Wappingers Falls; his grandchildren, Kailee, Hannah, Carter, Noah, Piper, Emma, Ava, Evelyn, and Caitlyn; his brother, William Simons (Eileen); his nephews and nieces, William Simons, Martin Simons, Valerie Slocum, and Nanci Thal; and many cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Dave used to say, "so long." We have finally realized it was never meant as good bye but as see you soon. We love you Dave, Dad, Opa, Papa Smurf, Uncle Stinky, Horse, and George. So Long.
A funeral mass will be offered on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 10 am at St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction, NY followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow at Mill Creek Caterers, Route 376 in Hopewell Junction at 12 pm. Donations may be made in memory of Dave to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
