David A. Velie, a lifelong local area resident, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024 at The Grand Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Pawling, NY. He was 75.
Son of the late Louis and Lila (Plain) Velie, he was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on September 22, 1948 and attended local schools. In 1969, David enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of several recognitions including the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from active service in 1971. Soon after, David started a career working in the food service department at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie; where he dedicated nearly 35 years. After some time working, he met Jane T. Monaco. Shortly after meeting, they joined hands in St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill, NY on June 8th 1991. Jane survives at home in Poughkeepsie, NY.
David retired in 2005 as head chef, and at home he enjoyed using his culinary skill to prepare meals for his family; even doing so from his wheelchair! He enjoyed listening to music, and watching tv; recently renewing his interest in the show "Three's Company".
He'll be remembered for his great sense of humor, and constant drive to make the best of everything; regardless of any adversity he faced.
Additional survivors include his daughter, Megan Velie and her partner Alexander Smith of Poughkeepsie; beloved grand fur-baby, "Bess"; one brother; two sisters; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and a few friends.
David was predeceased by his parents, three sisters, brother-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law.
A private memorial service and entombment will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
