FISHKILL – Deacon John F. O'Reilly, a Fishkill resident since 1990 and formerly of the Bronx, died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie on Monday, February 6, 2012 surrounded by his family and Deacon Mike Decker.
Deacon O'Reilly was born in the Bronx on March 7, 1930. He was the son of the late John and Mary Head O'Reilly. On April 28, 1947 at Our Lady of Refuge Church in the Bronx, he married Joan Wagner. Deacon O'Reilly was a devoted husband for 65 years to his wife who survives at home.
He proudly served our country in the United States Marines Corps from 1947 – 1950. He was a member of the New York Typographical Union for 20 years and then by the State of New York, as the Catholic Chaplain at Fishkill Correctional Facility and Camp Beacon. Deacon O'Reilly was ordained a Roman Catholic Deacon at St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1978 by Terrence Cardinal Cooke. He served as a Deacon at Our Lady of Refuge in the Bronx, Our Lady of Loretto in Cold Spring, St. Joachim and St. John's in Beacon, and St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.
John was a member of the American Legion and was a Third Degree Member of the Trinity Assembly, Knights of Columbus in Beacon. An avid golfer and bowler, he was also a fan of Yankees and Giants.
He was the beloved father of Maureen Stano and her husband George of Ossining, Steve O'Reilly of Brookfield, CT, and Dolores Rezendes and her husband Dave of Scituate, MA; an adored grandfather to his grandchildren, Eric, Kerry, Tara, Rob, Trevor, John, Caitlin, Lauren, Justin, and Sean and his great-grandchildren, Emily, Shannon, Ben, Brennan, and Avery; brother of Catherine "Kay" Coyle of Fishkill and Vincent O'Reilly of New York. He was predeceased by his daughter, Janice Burns; his daughter-in-law, Donna O'Reilly; his twin brother, Joe O'Reilly; and his sisters, Loretta Barr and Dorothy Sideris.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. Morning Prayer will begin at 10 am on Friday at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery with military honors.
