WAPPINGERS FALLS ~ Delreta Wellington, 72, passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2023 with her family by her bedside.
Delreta Prince was born in Jamaica on April 15, 1951 to the late Mother Justina Gordon (married name Justina Prince) and Father Alfanso Prince. Adopted parents Moses and Berenice Lucas. She immigrated to the US in 1991 with her two daughters, and lived in the Bronx until moving to Wappingers Falls in 2018. She was employed as a Home Health Aide Assistant at the Osborn Senior Living in Rye until her retirement.
While living in Jamaica, she enjoyed sewing and cooking. She also raised chickens and specialized in domestic work. She and her husband also operated a grocery store in Manchester, Jamaica before moving to New York. Delreta loved to cook and bake - her family remembers her as always having a home full of guests during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas and she did all the cooking. When you stopped by her home, you'd always find food.
A devoted Christian, Delreta attended church services, liked reading her bible and singing hymnal songs; one of her favorites songs was "What a Friend we have in Jesus". She loved spending time with her family and looked forward to playing Ludi (Jamaica Board game) with her husband.
Delreta met the love of her life, Ciaphas Wellington, ("Tyfus", she's the only one who called him by this name) in 1970 and married him in August 1988. He survives at home in Wappingers Falls. She is also survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Wellington of Wappingers Falls and Charlene Harry and her husband Phil of Wappingers Falls; her step-daughter Jennifer Wellington; her grandchildren, Kayshan, twins Alicia and Alexis, Nicholas, Nicole, Nathaniel, Jayden, and Amaya; her siblings only living brother Keith Prince; and adopted sister Lina Orridge; her sister-in-law, Pearline Wellington and three brother-in-law; many nieces and nephews and adopted families; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her twin daughters who died at birth; her adopted sister Maggie Lucas; and her adopted niece, Lorna Lucas.
