Son of the late T.C. and Bertha Elizabeth (Tom-wye) Tang, he was born In Chunking, China on October 19, 1939. When Dennis was four years old, he emigrated with his family to the United States, where they settled in Manhattan. Dennis received his bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont and later earned his master's degree from SUNY Albany.

He worked for the New York State Office of Mental Health, where he served as a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor at the former Harlem Valley and Hudson River State Hospitals, retiring in 1999.

He was a longtime dedicated member of the Poughquag United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee, formed a church-wide wind ensemble, and dedicated countless hours of volunteerism.
