Dennis Tang, a resident of Beekman, NY since 1977 and formerly of Wingdale, Schenectady, New York City, and China, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 84.
Son of the late T.C. and Bertha Elizabeth (Tom-wye) Tang, he was born In Chunking, China on October 19, 1939. When Dennis was four years old, he emigrated with his family to the United States, where they settled in Manhattan. Dennis received his bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont and later earned his master's degree from SUNY Albany.
He worked for the New York State Office of Mental Health, where he served as a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor at the former Harlem Valley and Hudson River State Hospitals, retiring in 1999.
Dennis was a naturally talented and skillful musician. He was a multi-instrumentalist who played a variety of instruments such as guitar, mandolin, bass, trombone, trumpet, and more. He belonged to several bands and lent his performance talents to countless community and church events.
Additional hobbies included painting, sculpting, and woodworking. While assisting his late mother in attending the Jackie Robinson Senior Citizen Center in New York City, Dennis became active with the center's Tai Chi program. Following the loss of his mother, he continued attending classes, at times substituting as the lead instructor in the teacher's absence.
He was a longtime dedicated member of the Poughquag United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee, formed a church-wide wind ensemble, and dedicated countless hours of volunteerism.
On February 8, 1977, he married Carole Clifton in Beekman, NY. Carole survives at home.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include his son, Paul Tang of Mahopac, NY; his grandson, Jack Tang; his sister, Rosalind T'ang Morf & her husband Martin; and many other loving relatives & friends.
