Deo W. Read, Jr., 67, a lifelong area resident, died on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born in Elmira on August 29, 1947, he was the son of the late Deo W. Read Sr. and Rose Ulanowski Read. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1965, SUNY Brockport in 1970 and C.W. Post College in 1980 with his Master's Degree. Deo was employed as a Senior Corrections Counselor for the State of New York at Green Haven Correctional Facility for 17 years until his retirement in 2005. From 1970-1985, he worked as the Chief Recreational Therapist at Harlem Valley State Hospital.
Deo was a parishioner of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in LaGrangeville. He was a member of the LaGrange Council #13378 and a Fourth Degree member of the John Paul II #2917 Assembly, Knights of Columbus. He served on the Pavilion Committee at Green Haven and was a member of the LaGrange Fire Department, Station #1. He also was a Past Scout Master for Troop 77 in Poughquag.
On May 22, 1971 at St. Denis C hurch in Hopewell Junction, Deo married Betty Anne Schaller who survives at home. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Deo and Ann Marie Read of LaGrange, Robert and Nicole Read of Aurora, OR, Dara and Reinaldo Pizarro of Hyde Park; and his seven grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10am at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1925 Route 82, LaGrangeville followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
