Obituary

LAGRANGEVILLE – Dimitri S. Doulos, 65, died peacefully in the loving presence of his family, on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Pastida Rhodes, Greece on May 18, 1950, he was the son of the late Savvas and Anastasia (Spartali) Doulos. At the young age of 12, Dimitri began making furniture as an apprentice; as a teenager he spent six years learning furniture and cabinet making in his godfather's cabinet shop. This skill and his passion for the trade continued with him for the rest of his life.

Dimitri left Greece in 1972 for Switzerland and then , two years later, moved to Germany. He continued to work independently as a craftsman in Europe until he arrived in New York City in 1975, where he quickly assimilated into the construction industry, working with local contractors on restaurant and hotel renovations. He moved to Newport Beach, CA in 1980 and attended Orange Coast College, majoring in Construction Technology and on June 21, 1983 he obtained a California State General Building Contractor's License. As a building contractor he specialized in architectural woodworking and cabinet making.

While living in California, Dimitri was fortunate enough to become friends with a famed builder, T. Duncan Stewart, most noted for constructing one of the first solar houses. Mr. Stewart was impressed with Dimitri's skill as a European craftsman and introduced him to Architects and Interior Designers in Newport Beach, CA. Dimitri obtained a reputation as a master wood craftsman, which landed him several prestigious contracts, one of the first was to install European style arched windows on the late John Wayne's home in Newport Beach, which required exceptional precision and expertise.

From there, he went on to own and operate Eurocraft Woodworking in Newport Beach, CA, and then Watertown, NY. Before retiring, he worked at Koshi Maxelum in Poughkeepsie where he supervised the making of laminated railroad panels, while continuing to do custom woodworking projects in New York City and locally.

On December 12, 1982 in Pastida, Rhodes, Greece, Dimitri married Virginia Doldo Doulos who survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Anastasia Rae Doulos, who is attending SUNY ESF in Syracuse and Brian Stafford Farmer and his wife Wendy of Hyde Park; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Danny Farmer; his sister, Katholiki Megaludi of France; his brother, Georgios Douos and his wife Anna of Greece; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Kostantinos, Michael, Yanni, his sister Katina Moshis; and his son, Kevin Farmer.

His hobbies included buying, repairing antique furniture, chair caning, gardening, bird watching and following soccer teams and games. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He was an artisan--- a kind, gentle soul who loved most of all his family, home, nature, and entertaining and cooking Greek specialty dishes for his family and friends.
