Obituary

Dominick Angelo Delia, Sr., a resident of Poughquag since 1988 and formerly of Peekskill, died on Monday, October 13, 2014 at his home.

Born in Northfield, VT on April 8, 1925, he was the son of Giusseppe and Elizabeth Timpano Delia. He graduated from Peekskill High School in 1943 and immediately after graduation enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Dominick completed Basic Training at Parris Island and served with the 5th Marine Corps Division in China, Hawaii and Japan. He was with the US Forces in the Battle of Iwo Jima and his unit was located on the hill when the American Flag was raised in victory. He was a member of the American Legion, Arlington Post #1302.

Dominick was a heavy duty machine operator and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers with Local #137 in Pleasantville from 1963 until his retirement in 1987. He had previously been employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie from 1951-1963. He was a life member of the Peekskill Fire Patrol and one of several organizers of the Peekskill High School Parents' Club. He was also active in Lapolla Little League when his sons were active players, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dominick was a communicant of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction and formerly of the Church of the Assumption in Peekskill.

On February 11, 1950 at the Church of the Assumption in Peekskill, Dominick married Dorothy Haight who survives at home. He is also survived by his sons, Dominick Delia Jr. of Poughquag, Michael (Linda) Delia of Poughquag, Joseph (Amy) Delia of LaGrange and Ralph (Kathy)Delia of Poughkeepsie; his daughters, Joy (Vincent) Colucci of Poughquag and Elizabeth Dingee of Kerhonkson; his brother, Joseph Delia of Cortlandt Manor; his most loved and precious grandchildren, Vincent and Jennifer Colucci, Anthony and Kate Colucci, Michele and Ryan Diggelmann, Bettina and Gregg Post, Hillary Dingee and Brandon Pra, Ryan and Alisha Dingee, Danielle and Joseph Delia Jr., Nicole, Brooke, Kristin and Michael Delia Jr., Guy, Ralph Jr. and Lauren Delia; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his oldest brother, Moses Delia; and his son-in-law Roger Dingee.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 3-7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery with Military Honors.
