Obituary

Donald C. Gingras, 91, a resident of Massachusetts since 2000 and formerly of Hopewell Junction, NY died on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Lowell General Hospital.
Born in Lowell, MA on June 19, 1919, he was the son of Alphonse Norbert and Isabel Campbell Gingras. He served in the US Army during World War II, after which he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Donald was employed as an Area Supervisor for the New York State Department of Parole for 33 years until his retirement in 1983.
On August 27, 1949 at St. Paul's Church in Staatsburg, Donald married Elizabeth Maher who predeceased him on October 9, 2000. He is survived by his son, Donald C. Gingras Jr. of South San Francisco, CA; his daughter, Ellen Mary Barkhuff and her husband James of Groton, MA; and his grandchildren, Gretchen McGowan and her husband Mick of Long Island, Daniel Barkhuff and his wife, Whittney Barkhuff of Brookline, MA and Patrick Barkhuff of South Orange, NJ.
Donald was a lifelong competitive swimmer. As a youth he swam for the Lowell YMCA, as a young man he swam for Hamilton College and up until 1999 he was an active participant in the Masters Swim program in Poughkeepsie, NY. He loved traveling, bridge, doing crossword puzzles and the company of his friends and family.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 26 at 12 pm at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction, NY followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
