Wappingers Falls - Donald S. Hays, a resident of Wappingers Falls since 1983 previously from Bedford Hills, NY passed away on June 14, 2024. He was 76 years old.
Donald was born in White Plains, NY on April 4, 1948, the son of the late Donald and Theresa (O'Shea) Hays.
With a grateful heart, Donald proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1971 and continued to serve the United States Air Force and the State of New York in the Air National Guard from 1973 to 2008. He served in Vietnam as well as being activated to support hundreds of troops for both Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Donald retired from the Air Force at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY with a brevet promotion to Chief Master Sergeant, the Air Force's highest enlisted grade.
On April 8, 1972, Donald married the love of his life Gay Marie Minasi at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mt. Kisco. She survives at home, along with his Shetland Sheepdog Bandit.
In his spare time, Donald's passion was to buy, sell, and trade diecast car models. For many years, he was a well-known fixture at his booth at the Stormville Flea Market where he loved to chat with anyone and everyone who shared his enthusiasm about model and classic cars. He also took great pride in gifting model cars to the younger generations to foster a timeless appreciation of cars and collectibles.
In addition to his wife Gay, Donald is survived by three children: John Hays, Michael Hays and his wife Kristina, and Katherine Kirsch (Hays) and her husband Paul Jr. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Thomas Hays, Tyler Hays, Jenna Hays, Kirsten and Ashley, along with two great-grandchildren. His sister Ellen Stipo survives in Larchmont.
Donald is pre-deceased by his brother Kenneth Hays.
Calling hours will be Thursday, June 20, 2024 at McHoul Funeral Home Inc. 895 Route 82 Hopewell Junction, NY from 5pm-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 10AM at St. Columba Church. Interment with military honors to follow at St. Denis Cemetery.
