Obituary

Douglas Quinn was the son of Helen Kleach and Thomas Quinn, beloved husband of 58 years to Betty, and proud father to Douglas (Margaret), Kathleen (Chris) Riggins and Laura (John) Cavallaro. His older brother, Thomas, predeceased him. Grandfather to five beautiful grandsons- Ryan, Owen and Sean Quinn, and Colin and Liam Riggins- who got to know their grandpa through skiing, sailing, and riding in with the ocean waves. They loved hiking at Mohonk together, rambling through the rock rifts and picnicking on cliff vistas- just as he had done with his kids decades before. Doug also leaves behind step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

Doug graduated from Brooklyn Tech, Cooper Union, and NYU grad school, where he studied Electrical Engineering. He had a long and successful career at IBM that he thoroughly enjoyed, especially in his later assignments in patent law.

Doug was always looking for places to explore with his wife by his side- from bike trails minutes from his home in Poughkeepsie to camping in the deserts of Morocco. He loved trips to the ocean and many trips worldwide with friends. Doug loved skiing- always seeking out the trail he had not ventured down with adventuresome ski partners. Doug loved sailing on the Hudson- and looked forward to Sunday races at Chelsea Yacht Club, where he was a long-time member and officer. Doug loved seeking out insanely spicy food and good buys for wine and beer. He would enjoy a glass or two with family and friends as he shared the region and background of the treasure he found. A lifetime learner through books and public broadcasting, Doug was a fount of knowledge on many topics ranging from politics and history to science and technology. He enjoyed tutoring math to high school students for many years. A lover of operas and classical music, he would blast his music with his Sunday morning breakfast or to drown out his five rambunctious grandsons as he drove them to sailing camp.

Doug had a good life, leading others with confidence and embracing every opportunity to create days full of adventure. His family will always carry the memories he created with us and his love of life and adventure in our hearts.
