Dr. Jacques Mercier Delphin, MD, 97, died peacefully at home on June 1, 2026.
Born in Cap Haitien, Haiti on April 26, 1929, Dr. Delphin was the son of the late Alexander and Sonia (Bernardin) Delphin. He immigrated to the United States in 1959.
A man deeply rooted in his faith, Dr. Delphin discovered his life's calling at just seven years old after witnessing his father suffer an asthma attack, a pivotal moment that inspired his lifelong path in medicine.
His distinguished career in psychiatry spanned more than seven decades, beginning with his residency at the Hudson Valley Psychiatric Center. He dedicated many years to the Dutchess County Department of Mental Health, where he served in numerous leadership roles, including Staff Psychiatrist, Consulting Psychiatrist, Psychiatrist-in-Chief of Partial Hospital Services, and Interim Commissioner. He also served as Medical Director at St. Cabrini Home and as an Attending Psychiatrist at St. Francis Hospital. In 1968, he established his private practice, remaining devoted to the care of his patients and actively practicing until recent years.
Dr. Delphin was honored as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a testament to his lifelong dedication and contributions to the field of psychiatry. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, where he served as Past President of its Mid-Hudson Branch, the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Addictions, and the Academy of Forensic Psychiatry. He was also a member of the Citizen Ambassador Program, which afforded him opportunities to participate in professional and cultural exchanges in China and Russia. Beyond his medical career, Dr. Delphin was an accomplished poet and songwriter whose work was published, and his expertise and accomplishments were recognized in numerous publications throughout the years.
Alongside his professional achievements, Dr. Delphin was a devoted family man with a deeply humanitarian heart. He was incredibly proud of his role as a father, always prioritizing his children and enthusiastically participating in their childhood activities-from camping trips and fishing excursions to dance shows and family travel.
Dr. Delphin is survived by his children, Patrick Delphin, Bart Delphin and his wife Sue, Beverly Chamberlain and her husband Todd, Miriam Delphin-Rittmon and her husband Patrick, Matthew Delphin and his wife Petra, and Janice Delphin-Alleyne and her husband Sam; his grandchildren, Jacqueline Williams and her husband Robert; Anais Delphin; Elizabeth Chamberlain Barnett and her husband Noah, and Grace Delphin; his great-grandchildren, Micah, Miri, Avela, and Ella; his brother, Maurice Delphin and his wife Carmen Elvigia; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Delphin was also predeceased by his siblings, Remi, Fulvie, and Ginette.
