WAPPINGERS FALLS - Edith L. Travis, 102, died peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2014 at her home.
Born in New York City on December 10, 1911, she was the daughter of Russell Bennett and Rose Reinhardt. She graduated from Briarcliff Manor High School. On March 19, 1937 in Ossining, Edith married Merle Travis who predeceased her on January 10, 1991. A true "Farmer's Wife", Edith and Merle owned and operated Travis Farm in the Town of Wappinger from 1943-1974. She was a member of the Hopewell Reformed Church where she served on the Women's Guild, and a member of the Home Bureau. She enjoyed gardening, canning and refinishing furniture, and will forever be remembered for her apple pies.
Edith is survived by her son, John Travis and his wife Betty of Penfield; her daughter, Lorraine Valk of Wappingers Falls; her grandsons, Steven Travis and his wife Lisa, and Kenneth Travis; and her great-grandchildren, Clayton, Sarah, Katherine and Tyler Travis. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her stepfather, Raymond Reinhardt and her son-in-law, Donald Valk.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am at the Hopewell Reformed Church, 143 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in Hopewell Cemetery.
