Obituary

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Edward M. Broderick, a Dutchess County resident since 1984, passed away at home in Wappingers Falls on Monday, February 6, 2023. He was 80.

He was born in Pittsfield, MA to Howard M. Broderick (deceased) and F. Barbara Broderick of Lee, MA.

Edward is survived by his wife Gunta; children, Lt. Col. Cynthia (Robert) Provost, USAF, Retired of Colorado Springs, CO, Deborah (David) Brennen of Beacon, NY, James (Rebecca) Broderick of St. Simons Island, GA, and Kathleen (Gregory) Hoppa of Hampstead, NH; grandchildren Wyatt, Molly, and Brennan Hoppa; Delaney and Danica Brennen; brother James Broderick of Lagrangeville, NY; siblings-in-law Peter Trova of Pittsfield, MA; Cynthia Broderick Mackoul of Great Barrington, MA as well as beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He is predeceased by his sister Barbara A. Trova.

He met Gunta Austrins in 1960 at the University of Massachusetts- Amherst. They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield, MA in 1964. After joining IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1964 as a programmer, he spent 35 years with IBM across several states, largely in the capacities of mainframe marketing, management, and technical support, as well as management of IBM's customers in the worldwide travel industry. After his IBM retirement in 1999, he spent several years as an industry analyst and consultant to the largest financial institutions on Wall Street.

He was a lifelong musician and cofounded the Broderick-Dehey Orchestra in Pittsfield, MA in the late 1950s. He received honors at UMass in 1963 as an All-American saxophonist in the John Philip Sousa All-American Band. Edward enjoyed singing in a number of church choirs around the country. In later years, he turned to choral singing and performed with a number of choirs in the local area, including the IBM Mid-Hudson Valley Chorus, the St. Cecilia Chorus of New York City (with whom he sang more than 25 times in Carnegie Hall), and most recently the Putnam Chorale and St. John / St. Joachim Parish in Beacon, NY.

Beyond music, he was an avid boater, golfer, woodworker, do-it-yourselfer, and model train railroader. In his many moves around the country for IBM, he was active with innumerable civic and church-affiliated organizations. In the 1980s, he served as Trustee, Vice President, and President of the Wappingers Central School District Board of Education. He also served as Treasurer of the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and volunteered extensively with United Way of Dutchess County.

As an IRS-certified tax preparer, he volunteered with the AARP Foundation Tax Aide program, serving Dutchess County and formerly served as State Coordinator for the AARP tax preparation effort in New York state. He also worked as a Tax Preparer and Accountant for Matthew B. Regan, CPA, of Poughquag, NY.

Edward was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Council #4065, Fishkill, NY.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 9 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 10 at St. Joachim Church, 51 Leonard Street, Beacon, NY. Interment will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 325 Washington Avenue, Beacon, NY.
