Effie
Uhl
April 14, 1935 – April 7, 2025
Effie C. Uhl passed away on April 7, 2025, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, just a week before her 90th birthday. She was born on April 14, 1935, in Stenimachos, Greece, to the late Vlassios and Chrisanthe (Stamati) Carpouzis. She immigrated to the United States when she was sixteen years old and became a naturalized American citizen in 1955.
Effie earned her bachelor's degree in education from SUNY New Paltz in 1958. She began her teaching career in Dover, Delaware, then moved back to New York and taught in the Wappingers Central School District for over thirty years. She spent the majority of her career teaching first grade at Sheafe Road Elementary School in Wappingers Falls, retiring in 1993.
On August 19, 1962, she married her beloved husband, Albert A. Uhl, Jr. They were married for almost sixty years. They had one child, Christopher, born in 1963.
Fashionable and elegant, Effie loved shopping and dining out and attending plays and concerts. She loved meeting people and getting to know them, and was never shy about it. If she attended a social event where people were standing around awkwardly and not talking, she would dive right in and introduce everyone to each other and start the conversation flowing. That was characteristic of her warm, outgoing personality and of how much she cared about people. She was an avid tennis player for decades. In later years, she discovered mah jongg and enjoyed playing with her friends.
Recently, Effie faced many health challenges. She was a fighter to the end. Her strength and resilience remain an inspiration to all who knew her.
Effie is survived by her devoted son, Christopher Uhl, who will always be grateful for her endless love and support.
Effie was predeceased by her husband and by her two brothers, Arthur and George Carpouzis.
Her funeral will take place on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church,140 South Grand Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY, followed by burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY.
