Obituary

Elizabeth L. Barish, a resident of Fishkill, NY since 2011 and formerly of White Plains, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 14, 2025. She was 79.Daughter of the late Frank and Mary Anne (Diamond) Newsome, she was born in Port Chester, NY on October 29, 1945.Betty was deeply involved in special education, having worked as an assistant teacher in White Plains and New Jersey. She also volunteered for the Special Olympics and the Association for Mentally Ill Children of Westchester.As a mother, she was actively involved in her children's schooling and extracurricular activities. She participated in several PTA organizations and went out of her way to come up with creative endeavors for birthday parties and celebrations such as personalized scavenger hunts and Double-Dare games.Betty's hobbies included reading, cruises, coffee and scary movies with her kids, crocheting and knitting an assortment of hats, slippers or blankets to give with love, cruises, spoiling her furry grand-dogs and taking road trips (especially with Bill). She was especially proud of her accomplishment of visiting all 50 US States. She was also a member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.On January 1, 1976, she married Milton "Bill" Barish in White Plains. Betty cherished their more than 50 years together, as they moved from NY to FL to NJ and, ultimately, to their final home in Fishkill, NY.She is also survived by her daughter, Beth Smith & her husband Paul of Ossining, NY; her grandson, Brandon Lent; ; her daughter, Maryanne Barish of Yorktown Heights, NY; her daughter, Shelley Barish & her partner Jason DeVeau of Ashland, MA, along with Jason's children Paige, Abby, and Will; her son, Brian Barish & his partner Charlie Estaban of San Francisco, CA; her sister, JoAnne Williams; as well several nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives & friends.In addition to her parents, Betty was also predeceased by her sister, Carol Lavallo.Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7pm on Monday, July 21 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A memorial service will be conducted at 5:30pm.Entombment will be held privately, the following day, at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation (www.hvhospice.org), Community Cooks (www.communitycooks.org) or Operation Backpack (www.voa-gny.org/operation-backpack).
