Obituary

Ellen Margurite Rathbun Delocis died peacefully in her sleep Monday, January 31 2022. She was 90 years old.

An avid cook, gardener, and volunteer until late in life, Ellen was born December 15, 1931 in Cooperstown, New York. Raised on a dairy farm with her brother Richard Rathbun and late sister Jane Herring, Ellen was a lifetime Yankees fan and a subscriber to the Metropolitan Opera.

A proud graduate of Albany Medical School's College of Nursing, at that time affiliated with Union University, she never forgot that the rules of the time barred her from using the Schenectady campus' library after dark, spurring a lifelong interest in female equality and empowerment (the love of reading was already there).

She became a school nurse teacher and was introduced to Robert Delocis by her roommate at the State University at Plattsburgh. In 1967 they married, in a small ceremony in Yorktown Heights and she paused her career in 1968. Bob died in 2003.

Ellen is survived by her two children, Anna (Delocis) Scott and Peter Delocis, who, along with Anna's husband Blake Scott and children Josey and Haydin, love and miss Ellen, as do her younger brother Richard, her many nieces and nephews, and her devoted friends and neighbors.

Ellen returned to work in 1982 as the school nurse of Gayhead Elementary school in Hopewell Junction, NY until she retired in 1996, but remained in touch with her former co-workers, often going to lunches and concerts with her colleagues.

She volunteered at the Nifty Thrifty shop in Beacon and the Hopewell Hose firehouse in Hopewell Junction, as well as working as an election monitor. In lieu of flowers, those who knew and loved her are encouraged to pitch in or help to a cause that is meaningful to them.
