Obituary

Ellen Lachowicz, a resident of Fishkill for more than 50 years, and formerly of Connecticut, died at home on Monday, June 22, 2015. She was 79.
Daughter of the late Samuel and Rose (Voli) Santucci, she was born on July 28, 1935 in New Britain, CT. She graduated from New Britain High School in 1953 and earned a bachelor's degree from the Teachers College of Connecticut, now known as Central Connecticut State University. In 1960, she received a master's degree in history from the University of Connecticut.
In 1959, she married Donald R. Lachowicz at St. Joseph's Church in New Britain and in 1962 they relocated to Fishkill. Several years later, she went to work for the Wappingers Central School District and taught at several schools, including Wappingers Junior High School, Van Wyck Junior High School, and John Jay Senior High School, retiring in 1999. She had previously taught for the Manchester, CT Public School System.
Ellen had a strong passion for history, and was a charter member of the Fishkill Historical Society. A world traveler, she visited many countries and experienced countless cultures throughout the world. Her inherent love for history and culture bolstered her ability as a teacher. She had a strong attachment to Cape Cod, which she enjoyed during the warmer months. She was also a fitness enthusiast, and often could be seen working out at the local gym.
Ellen was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill, and was active with the Legion of Mary. She also volunteered for the Fishkill Food Pantry and Wingate at Dutchess, Fishkill.
Ellen is survived by her husband Donald at home; her daughter, Mary Ellen Lachowicz of Pound Ridge, NY; her daughter, Jean Elizabeth Lachowicz and her husband Bernie Heer of Berkeley Heights, NJ; her grandson, Carl Heer; and her brother, Anthony Santucci and his wife Millie of Wethersfield, CT. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives & friends.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 25th at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill.
