FISHKILL – Elmer E. Ziegler, a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, passed away at home on Saturday, February 12, 2022. He was 93.
Son of the late John and Eleanora (Wirth) Ziegler, he was born in Ossining, NY on March 25, 1928. He served in the Merchant Marines. In 1951, Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. In 1952, he was honorably discharged from active duty and was transferred to the Army Reserve, where he served until 1957.
He retired as an accountant for IBM at the company's East Fishkill location.
Elmer was a sports and fitness enthusiast who enjoyed playing baseball. He ran five miles every day, and once he was no longer able, he committed to walking daily until his health would no longer allow him to do so.
More than anything, Elmer cherished his family whom he loved greatly as they did likewise. He will be remembered for his infectious smile and positive outlook on life.
On October 15, 1955, he married Florence Kayser Ziegler in Ossining. He was predeceased by Florence on April 11, 2021 after 65 years of marriage.
Survivors include his three daughters: Linda Stronconi & her fiancé John Lucariello, Nancy Marinaccio & her husband Ralph, Jr., and Janet Hodge & her husband Steven; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and other loving relatives.
In addition to his wife and parents, Elmer was also predeceased by two brothers, John Charles Ziegler and Rudolph Ziegler.
The family would like to offer their gratitude to all those who cared for Elmer, including the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice, especially Brianna and Petal; their friends, Stormy and Carol; and special love & thanks for Monica for all of her assistance.
Services were held privately, with burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
