Erna Maria Oldermann Zipay, 82, an area resident since 1962, died on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She had lived in Pleasant Valley, Poughquag, Stormville and Wappingers Falls, in addition to New Jersey and the Midwest.
Born in Newark, NJ on January 11, 1931, she was the daughter of Walter E. and Maria Roth Oldermann who were both born in Germany. She attended schools in Livingston, NJ and was a 1948 graduate from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, NJ. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fishkill, was involved in many community and school organizations including East Fishkill Little League, and will forever be remembered as the "Heavy Metal Mom" of Von Laven.
Erna is survived by her children, Joanne Zipay of New Windsor, Michael Zipay and his wife Gayle of Murfreesboro, TN, John Zipay of Pleasant Valley and Christopher Zipay and his wife Carla of North Haven, CT; her sister, Margarete Oldermann Halloran of San Diego, CA; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In 1953, Erna married Michael Zipay who predeceased her in 2001.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service and interment will be held on Thursday at 1pm at Restland Memorial Park, 77 DeForest Avenue, East Hanover, NJ.
