Eugene Ruta, 91, a resident of Cairo and formerly of Wappingers Falls and Yonkers, died on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center.
Born in Ruvo di Puglia, Italy on January 28, 1923, he was the son of Vincent and Teresa Minafra Ruta. Eugene proudly served our country as a Seaman First Class in the US Coast Guard during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. He was employed as a bus driver for the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Authority for 23 years until his retirement in 1978.
On July 8, 1948 at St. Pius Church, Eugene married Patricia Ruta who predeceased him on November 16, 1995. He is survived by his sons, Gene Michael Ruta of New Fairfield, CT, Vincent Shane Ruta of Wappingers Falls, and Damon Wayne Ruta of Palm Coast, FL; his siblings, Aldo Ruta of Wappingers Falls, Jacquelyn Fabrizio of Carol, Frances Muller of East Islip and Dolores Ruta of Albany; 7 grandsons, 2 granddaughters and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother Michael Ruta.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 10am-11:30am at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12pm at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction with military honors.
