Evelyn Pappas Costas, 87, a resident of Pawling for 16 years and formerly of Brooklyn, died on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Wingate at Beacon.
Born in Rockaway Beach, Queens on May 4, 1926, she was the daughter of Theodore and Anna Romas Cavoores. She graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Costume Design and was employed as a bookkeeper for Care, Inc. in Manhattan. Evelyn was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Pawling and was a member and officer of the Tenants' Association at the Kings Apartments. A dressmaker, she also enjoyed crocheting.
Evelyn was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Pappas; her second husband, Steve Costas; her son, James Pappas; her brothers, Louis and George Cavoores; and her sister, Betty Fagan. She is survived by her daughter Sia Oepen and her husband Tom of Poughquag; her grandchildren, Alethea Burke and her husband Christopher, and James Tomapat and his girlfriend, Sarah Hart; her great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Burke; her step-grandchildren, Melissa Adams, and Laura Casey and her husband Scott; and her step, great-grandchildren, Madeline and Archer Adams, Skylar, Sander and Sydney Casey.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. There will be a service at 7:30pm with Rev. Jon Ellingworth officiating. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
