Frederick McVicker, 90, a resident of Fishkill since 1965, died at his daughter's home in Nelsonville on Thursday, March 18, 2010.
Born in Belfast, Ireland on January 15, 1920, he was the son of the late James and Mary Flynn McVicker. On June 30, 1945, he married Mary Connolly in St. Patrick's Church in Belfast. Mary predeceased him on February 6, 2010.
Fred operated his own barber shop in Fishkill for many years. Prior to this, he was employed at the Vassar Barber Shop in Poughkeepsie and Alexander's Barber Shop in Red Oaks Mill. For about twenty years, he worked at Aldo's Barber and Beauty Shop until his retirement in 1993.
A parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill since 1965, Fred also belonged to St. Mary's Council #4065, Knights of Columbus and was a fourth degree member of the John Paul II Assembly #2917. A member of the Kevin Barry Irish Club, he was honored to be Grand Marshall of the Dutchess County St. Patrick's Day Parade, along with his wife. Fred and his wife Mary were the first coordinators of Project Children in Dutchess County. They were both honored in Northern Ireland for their tireless work for the benefit of the children of Northern Ireland and awarded Irish Americans of the Year. Fred was renowned for his wonderful tenor voice. As a young boy, he sang with the Newsboys choir in Belfast. One of the performances honoring the then British Prince of Wales was carried live on BBC radio.
Fred is survived by his children, Helen Sarma (Nara) of Verbank, Patricia Petty (Jay) of Cape Canaveral, FL, Maire Villetto (William) of Nelsonville, Gerard McVicker (Sheila) of Stormville, Frederick McVicker (Anne Marie) of Beacon, and Joseph McVicker (Susan) of Newport, NC; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his brother, Michael McVicker of Belfast, Ireland; and his sister-in-law, Patricia Kerr (Patrick) of Beacon.
Fred was predeceased by five brothers (James, William, Jack, Matt, and Patrick) and six sisters (Hanna, Lilly, Catherine, Sarah, Mary and Catherine) all in Ireland, and also his grandson, William Villetto.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. TODAY, SUNDAY, MARCH 21, at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. TOMORROW, MONDAY, MARCH 22 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 100 Jackson St., Fishkill, followed by interment at St. Joachim's Cemetery in Beacon.
