Obituary

Gene Olin Baker, 86, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on January 14, 2023 after a brief battle with dementia and related symptoms. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice, daughter, Amy Nardone (husband Tony), sons Greg (wife Patti and stepson Corey) and Gene Jr. (wife Valorie), granddaughters Peyton and Kellyn, and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was born on April 4, 1936 to Glenwood and Lela Baker near Jonesville, Michigan. After graduating from Jonesville High School, where he was a 3-sport letterman, Gene attended Michigan State University, stepping away from his studies in Electrical Engineering for a term of service in the US Army, stationed at Thule, Greenland and El Paso, Texas. Upon completion of his degree at MSU he landed career long employment with IBM and relocated to the Poughkeepsie, NY area where he was a member of a team that, among other ventures, invented memory hardware that greatly reduced the space needed for digital storage hardware.

Early in life, Gene learned the importance of hard work and discipline and he instilled that in all around him. He was the rock of his family, whether helping with homework, consoling a set back, or celebrating a milestone achievement. Most importantly, he always did what he believed to be the right thing, no matter the inconvenience or difficulty, benefitting not only his family, but also numerous community service organizations including Lions Club, Elks Club, and multiple youth athletic associations.

Gene was a true role model and one of the kindest souls on Earth. He worked tirelessly to ensure that his family members would have every opportunity to succeed and prosper. His legacy will live on for generations through all who had the privilege to have known him.

Gene's family will gather for a small memorial service on January 21.
