HOPEWELL JUNCTION - George J. Geary, 74, an area resident since 1969, died on January 18, 2019 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He previously lived in Peekskill.
Born on December 3, 1944 in Pittsburgh, PA, George was the son of the late James and Margaret (Stacer) Geary. George graduated from North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA, earned his undergraduate degree from Gannon University in Erie, PA, and his Master's Degree from New York University. He retired as Senior Systems Engineer from IBM in Poughkeepsie after 25 years of service and then was Senior Director Hardware and Storage for Medco Health Solutions in New Jersey.
On July 22, 1967 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Northport, Long Island, he married Margaret (Blydenburgh) Geary. His wife of 51 years survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Brian Geary of Milwaukee, WI and Kevin Geary and his wife Cory of New York City; his grandchildren, Parker and Carson Geary; his siblings, Mary Ann Prior, Paul Geary, Francis (June) Geary, James (Carolyn) Geary, Leo Geary, and Catherine Geary; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
An avid golfer, George was also a voracious reader, a daily soduko puzzle solver, an culinary enthusiast, and an international traveler. He liked home improvement projects and built many friends in the community through his endeavors. Most of all, George will be remembered a great family man and as the World's Best Grandfather.
George was a major fundraiser for the American Heart Association and participated in over 20 years of the Dutchess Ulster Heart Walk. Therefore, in lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to the Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Heart Association.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5-7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Burial will take place at St. Denis Cemetery at the convenience of his family.
