George Beringer Schaeffer, Jr., of the Town of LaGrange, died Monday, March 18, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 86.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice, his children: Susan (Craig), Alice Marie, Diane, George B. III (Helene), Janet, Christine (Robert) and by eight grandchildren: Matthew, Jeffrey, Eric (Coleen), Laura, Christian, Michael, Emma, Max, and one great-grandchild, Alanna. He is also survived by his brothers Donald of Ohio, Gordon of Florida, Pembroke of Maine, one sister, Nancy of Pennsylvania, plus many nieces and nephews.
Born in Secaucus NJ, he was a WWII era Navy Veteran and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering degree. He was a member of the Stevens "Old Guard." He worked for IBM for 40 years in NYC, Endicott, and Poughkeepsie as a customer engineer and market planner. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fishkill. George was a farmer at heart and loved to plant and tend trees and vegetables.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 22 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1400 Route 52, Fishkill. Interment will follow at LaGrange Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in George's name may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1400 Route 52, Fishkill, NY 12524. The contributions will benefit a church project to restore the front entrance.
