Obituary

Gerard "Jerry" Bierfeldt of East Fishkill, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City, surrounded by his loving family.  He was 59.

Jerry was born in the Bronx, NY on October 28, 1950 and was one of four children born to Jack and Joan Bierfeldt.  His love, care, and generous spirit served as an example to everyone he came across.

On June 24, 1979 he married Janet Milani and together had three wonderful children.

Jerry was an avid golfer who enjoyed sports, reading, and spending time with his family.  His favorite athlete was Arnold Palmer.

He was described by his brother Jimmy as a man who "had what he wanted and wanted what he had."  Jerry Bierfeldt was content with what the Lord had provided him, a loving family who looked up to him and to whom he could devote his time.  His wife recalls he would have been happy with a steak or a hot dog, just so long as his children had enough to eat.

He had a long career in the Social Security Administration, first in the Bronx, New York from 74-82, then at the Appeals Council in Arlington, Virginia until 1988 and then in White Plains, New York until 2010.

Jerry was a dedicated and hard-worker in every task he undertook, whether in the office or at home.  His wife and children will affectionately remember him for his caring spirit, his positive attitude, and his collection of quirks.

The stories used to describe Jerry Bierfeldt's life would span a number of pages.  Growing up as a supermarket cashier, he once received a counterfeit bill and was told by his supervisor to give it back to someone as change.  Feeling unable to give the bill to an unsuspecting customer, he eventually reached into his own pocket and paid to make up the discrepancy in the cash drawer.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet Bierfeldt; his three children Steven, Kristen, and Kevin; his mother, Joan Bierfeldt; his sister, Peggy Bierfeldt; his brother, James Bierfeldt; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John Bierfeldt on April 4, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, it was Jerry's wish to have donations made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 501,  Memphis, TN 38101.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct, NY.
