Obituary

Gloria T. Carver

December 31, 1935 - November 29, 2024

New York, NY - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria T. Carver (Sanchez). She died peacefully at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut on Friday, November 29, 2024. She was 88 years old.

Daughter of the late Roman Sanchez and Rafaela Sanchez (Reyes), Gloria was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico on December 31, 1935. She was one of four children and loved her family dearly.

A resident of Manhattan since grade school when her family moved to New York City from her native Puerto Rico, Gloria attended Washington Irving High School. She trained at the Hollywood Academy of Hair and Beauty Culture to earn her New York State license for the practice of hairdressing and cosmetology in 1957. She was known throughout her life for her impeccable taste and her love of style, fashion, and beauty.

In 1963, Gloria earned a certificate of achievement from the Panamerican Systems & Tabulating Institute in NY for completing the prescribed course of study for IBM Key Punch Operator. This led to a long career as a key punch operator, first at Nehring Brothers, a real estate firm in Manhattan, and then the payroll department at NY Presbyterian Medical Center. She retired in the late 1980s.

Gloria was introduced to the love of her life, Charles Carver, at a church function in 1968. They married at Central Baptist Church in Manhattan on September 14, 1969, and remained inseparable throughout their 55-year marriage. They welcomed their daughter Esther one year later. Gloria was a devoted wife and mother and cherished these roles above all else. She loved taking care of her family and her home. She also took great care of herself, staying fit, active, and forever young-at-heart.

In recent years, she was especially proud of her role as grandmother to her only grandchild, Matthew. He was the apple of her eye and always went out of her way to express how much she loved him.

Gloria leaves a beautiful legacy of unwavering faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her love of Christ and His teachings was evident in every part of her life, and she was a blessing to everyone who knew her. She was known as the family's "prayer warrior," praying for her loved ones daily. She will be fondly remembered for her caring and generous spirit, contagious laugh, and her ability to cook the most delicious traditional Puerto Rican meals.

She is survived by her beloved husband Charles, her daughter Esther (husband Douglas), her grandson Matthew, as well as her extended family of nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law who loved her very much. She will be greatly missed.

Gloria is predeceased by her parents and her siblings Hector Sanchez, Julio Sanchez, and Carmen Sonia Maurice (Sanchez).
