On Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 12:45pm, Harry C. Miller began his journey to be reunited with Mary Lou, his loving wife of 42 years. Harry was her caregiver for the last 3 years of her life. It's now time for them to be together once again. Many times, when going to dinner at my father's house, the table would be set for 4. When asked why 4, he said, "I must be thinking of Mary Lou." My father can now set the table for 2.
Harry was born on September 3, 1923 to Charles and Lotti VanVlack Miller in Hopewell Junction. He was employed by IBM for over 35 years until 1987. At the time of his retirement, he was a 3rd level manager in Armonk. He proudly served our country in the United States Naval Air Force from 1943 to the end of World War II.
Harry, who was the longest living member of the congregation, was a communicant member of the Hopewell Reformed Church for over 70 years. He was the youngest person to be elected to the office of deacon and elder on Consistory and served at least 30 years on Consistory. He had been a lay leader on numerous occasions and has given the lay message as well. He participated in and led on occasion the new members classes. He was also the narrator at church pageants on many occasions and was a choir member. He was instrumental on the first expansion of the church which included the Sunday School and parking lot expansion.
Harry was the drum major in the Fife Drum and Bugle Corps sponsored by the Hopewell Hose Co. and was named All American Drum Major and led the corps to top awards in New York State. He was the first Director of the East Fishkill Recreation Commission and coached Pee Wee and Little League teams.
Harry had been an active charter member of the East Fishkill Kiwanis Club for over 30 years. He was the president in 1963 and led the organization to achieve international recognition as "best club of its size." He chaired numerous fundraising events such as bringing the first circus to East Fishkill, the home and garden shows, and many dinner dances. He directed the compilation of the first classified business directory of East Fishkill. He worked on recreation and beautification projects for the town. Harry organized and participated in talent shows to raise funds for town projects. He received the Kiwanian Award of the Year in 1968. He chaired the 25th anniversary celebration of the club.
In 1969, he was introduced to Mary Louise Stevens. They married on May 29, 1970, and enjoyed 42 wonderful and loving years together. Harry is survived by his daughter, Donna Stevens Trimboli; and son, Dennis Miller and his wife, Catie. He has 3 grandsons: Jeffrey and Michael Miller, sons of Dennis and Jan Dell Churchill Miller, and David Trimboli, son of Andrew and Donna Stevens Trimboli; his great-grandson, Hudson Patrick Miller, son of Kelley and Jeffrey Miller; and multiple nieces and nephews. A very special thanks to his nephew, Harry Bruce Miller, for the special friendship that he shared with Harry for many years. Bruce, who was born on the same date as his uncle, was named after his, "Uncle Harry".
