Obituary

FISHKILL - Helen Mary Fries, a Dutchess County resident since 1961, died at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Sunday, December 22, 2013. She was 82.
Daughter of the late Edward and Anne Burke Roche, she was born on October 9, 1931 in the Bronx, where she was raised and lived into her early adulthood.
Helen's career was dedicated to education. From 1955 to 1960, she taught junior high school in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. In 1967, she began teaching for the Wappingers Central School District, where she served as a substitute teacher at Wappingers and Van Wyck Junior High Schools. She retired in 1992.
Helen was a dedicated parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill. She actively volunteered for the St. Columba Dolphins swim team from 1971 to 1987.
On March 30, 1959, she married Robert L. Fries at St. Margaret's Church in Riverdale, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 10, 1997.
Survivors include her daughter, Maureen Fries of Deerfield Beach, FL; her son, Robert Fries & his wife Tami (La Coursiere) of Germantown, MD; her son, Paul Fries & his wife Kelly (Morrell) of Victor, NY; her daughter, Clare (Fries) Carreras & her husband Ric of Southborough, MA; her grandchildren, Kevin, Maura, Elizabeth, Brian, Kayla, Aly, Ryan, Ric, Christopher, and Matthew; her sister, Patricia (Roche) Cheetham of Wappingers Falls, NY; her brother, James Roche of Valhalla, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives & friends.
In addition to her husband, Helen was also predeceased by her brothers, Edward and John Roche.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 27 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 28 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Wappingers Falls.
