Helen F. Martino, a resident of Fishkill since 1993 and formerly of New Rochelle, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 93.
Daughter of the late Ellen Reilly, she was born in the city of New York on December 24, 1926 in the borough of Manhattan. Helen worked as a bank clerk and as a retail sales associate for many years, but her true profession was as a homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill. Helen was creative, fun-loving, selfless and silly. She enjoyed creating homemade games to play with her great grandchildren and loved to dance. She also enjoyed music, playing cards, baked goods, thrilling movies and was known to have a sweet tooth. More than anything else, Helen was solely focused on her family and cherished spending time with those she loved. Helen not only raised her own two children, but also later in life took on the responsibility of her grandson, Danny, as well. Helen was lovingly known to others as “GH” which stands for Grandma Helen, which relates to her strong identity as a mother. She was a fixture at all of her great grandchildren’s sporting events, birthdays, holidays and special events. Creating lasting memories with them was her greatest accomplishment.
On August 28, 1956, she married Angelo Martino, who predeceased her on March 22, 2006. In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was also predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Martino, as well as her son, Stephen Martino. Survivors include two grandsons, Dan Martino of Walden and Jesse Gaston of Ohio; her great-grandchildren, Angelo Martino, Dominic Martino, and Mikayla Gaston; and many other loving relatives & friends.
