FISHKILL – Helen Wittmer Matalavage, a local area resident since 2010, died at home on Monday, January 23, 2017. She was 99.
Daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Keiser) Wittimer, she was born in Mahanoy City, PA on August 22, 1917. After graduating Mahanoy City High School, she attended the McCann School of business and worked at the DPW during the depression. On October 10, 1942, she married Albert J. Matalavage at St. George's Church in Shenandoah, PA. After moving to Philadelphia, she worked as a Private Secretary at General Electric.
Helen and Albert then moved to New York, where they resided in the Glen Oaks section of Queens. For many years, she worked as a clerk in the Medical Records Department at Creedmoor State Hospital in Queens Village, retiring in 1982.
Helen enjoyed traveling and keeping in touch with her relatives & friends. She was a member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.
She was predeceased by her husband on March 24, 1991.
Survivors include two daughters, Bettine Avenia & her husband Richard of Montclair, NJ and Alexis Lynch & her husband Steve of Fishkill; her grandchildren, Rachel Avenia Prol & her husband Robert of East Sandwich, MA, Daniel Lynch of Poughkeepsie, Nicole Avenia Fritzky & her husband Luke of Bloomfield, NJ, Keith Lynch of Beacon, and Lauren Avenia Danridge & her husband Neale of Pine Brook, NJ; her great-grandchildren, Abigail & Cooper Danridge and Chloe Fritzky; and many other loving family members & friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was also predeceased by her sisiter, Dorothy Wittmer.
Calling hours will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 26 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Interment will be at St. Fidelis Cemetery in Mahanoy City, PA.
