Helen Theresa Savarese, 95, a Dutchess County resident for 6 years and previously of Whitestone, died on December 13, 2021 at home.
Born on November 22, 1926 in New York City, Helen was the daughter of Francesco and Lida (Comingo) Scarfo.
Helen had 7 brothers and 5 sisters. They were all placed and grew up in an orphanage on Staten Island . Despite her unfortunate start, her humor, goodness and strength carried her through and she married and raised her 5 children . She also worked as an admissions clerk for St. John's Hospital. After retirement, she attended Maspeth Senior Center for 30 years . Helen truly enjoyed the center . She loved to dance, play cards and exercise. It was her nature to always help and serve other Seniors. She became a Senior Exercise Instructor at the age of 80. She also won NYC Senior of the Year! When she moved to Dutchess County, she enjoyed spending time at the Beekman and East Fishkill Senior Centers. She loved being with her family and friends. In her last years, she was assisted at home and shared her wisdom, humor and love with her family and her faithful
caregivers.
Helen is survived by her children, Frank Savarese and his wife Andrea of Roanoke, VA, Helen Schweitzer and her husband Roy of Union Vale, Albert Savarese and his wife Tami of Whitestone, Robert Savarese of Nyack; her grandchildren, Alfredo and his wife Phyllis, Jennifer, Melissa, Peter, Daniel, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Danielle; her great grandchildren, Guliana, Peter, Ariana, Marina and AJ; her nieces, Theresa DelToro and Irene DiGiovanni. Helen was predeceased by her daughter, Frances Savarese Molinari on July 8, 2021.
Calling hours will be held on 12/17 Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on
12/18 Saturday at 9:45am at The Church of St. Mel, 2615 154th St. Queens followed by interment at St. John's Cemetery in Queens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice.
