Hilda May Huggan Wright, 83, an area resident for 17 years and formerly of Peekskill and the country of Jamaica, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 6, 2014. Born in Jamaica on October 19, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Estella (McLaughlin) Huggan. In 1961, in Kingston, Jamaica, Hilda married Aston Wright who predeceased her in 1987. For many years she owned and operated her own hair dressing business and a general store that sold groceries, clothing, fabric, stationary, etc. She was an active member of her church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Clarendon, Jamaica, starting a program to feed the elderly and shuts-in. True humanitarians, Hilda and her husband Aston, gave generously of their time and money to help hundreds of local children, the less fortunate and the elderly. After her retirement, she immigrated to the US to live with her children and help take care of her grandchildren. Hilda enjoyed studying the Bible, attending church, singing and writing Christian songs, floral arrangements, embroidery and was an avid gardener. Hilda volunteered as a Christian Missionary at a nursing home in Orange County, NY. She attended the River Valley Care Center in Poughkeepsie for many years.
She is survived by her children, Leleith Smith and her husband Garvin of Yorktown Heights, Selvin Wright of Canada, Barrington Wright of Westchester County, Charmaine Moshier of Fishkill, and Michell Jumpp and her husband Vaughn of Fishkill; and her grandchildren, Rukiya Smith, Natalie Wright Njotu, Shomari Smith, Selvin Wright, III, Aaron Wright, Naomi Wright, Aston Wright and Micah Jumpp.
