Obituary

James Francis Borland passed away peacefully at home in Poughquag, New York April 25, 2023 surrounded in prayer and song by his wife, children and grandchildren.

Born July 30, 1929 to James and Marie (ne McGovern) Borland he was 93 years old. He was the second oldest of sixteen; born in Philadelphia he was raised in Queens , New York. On September 21, 1958 James married Margaret Lyons at St. Rose of Lima Church in Rockaway Beach, New York. He is survived by his wife of 65 years and by his six children, Margaret Halliday, Clare Rayder (William), James P. Borland, Catherine B. Merryman (David), John Borland (Bridgette) and Helena Trainor (Dan). Also left to cherish his memory are thirteen, adoring grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother-in-law Paul Glanzman, his sister Cassie Moore and brothers Michael, Gerard, Kevin, Stephen, and Robert. His impact will also be cherished by his many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Jim was a man of dignity and grace who loved his Catholic faith and depended on daily prayer to journey a life devoted to hard work for fifty years at the Daily News as a stereotyper, raising his family in St Francis de Sales Parish in Belle Harbor, NY, and providing for his children things he never had himself.

James was a man who claimed his wife saved him but anyone who knew him, knew it was God that saved him. His dedication to sobriety offered him 63 years of helping others to restore their life and families one day at a time by relying on the Grace of God and the support of people who understand and who know the way to recovery. To those who loved him most, he was a theologian and scholar of Thomas Merton and Thomas A. Kempis, he sought through prayer and meditation a constant contact with God, he bore suffering bravely, he was generous, he championed the working class and the poor, never had time for gossip, was part of the solution in this world, never held a resentment and always celebrated others accomplishments and successes. Living through nine historic decades, he had seen it all yet lived everyday with gratitude and purpose. He never tired of giving of himself in service to others and most notably touched many lives with the endless hours he worked to give away what he had, so that others might be saved by a life in Christ.

Our dear father was a gentleman, a scholar, an ok racetrack handicapper, who liked a two dollar exacta box, a jazz enthusiast, and a grateful and proud American Irishman who was fully human and fully alive every day of his life. The world is a much better place because of him. Well done, good and faithful servant go now and share your master's happiness.
