Obituary

WAPPINGERS FALLS - James M. McCann, 81, an area resident since 1969, died on February 1, 2025 at home surrounded by his family. He previously lived on Long Island.

Born in Floral Park, NY on February 9, 1943, James was the son of the late John and Regina (Slattery) McCann. He graduated from St. John's University with a BS in Chemistry and earned an advanced degree at SUNY New Paltz. James proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

In 1998, he retired from Texaco in Glenham where he was employed as a research scientist and group leader for 34 years. He had second careers working for Entergy (Con Edison) and Malcolm Pirnie. He was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials.

James was a parishioner at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction and a member of the Knights of Columbus #4065 in Fishkill. James was an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 40 Hopewell Junction. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, NJ. More than anything, James loved spending time with his family.

On June 29, 1968 in Shenandoah, PA, James married Lucille (Bobbin) McCann. His wife of 56 years survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Christopher McCann of Wappingers Falls, Kathleen McCann of Wappingers Falls, Dennis McCann and his wife Heather of Clarendon Hills, IL, Timothy McCann and his wife Megan of Briarcliff Manor, NY, and Michael McCann and his wife Gina of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Brigid, Dennis, Molly, Martin, Megan, Audrey, Colin, Aidan, and Loch; his sister, Patricia Hoey, and her husband Michael of Dagsboro, DE, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Monsignor John McCann, in 2016.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 4th from 4-7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial is being offered on Wednesday, February 5th at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY, followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
