Jean
Potanovic
July 18, 1929 – December 31, 2024
Jean M. Potanovic, a Dutchess County resident since 1998, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the Friedwald Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in New City, NY. She was 95.
Daughter of the late John and Thelma (Surovy) Jenkofsky, she was born in Yonkers, NY on July 18, 1929. Jean grew up in Yonkers NY and had a deep desire to become a nurse since she was 16 years old. Jean graduated from St. John's Hospital Cockran School of Nursing in 1951. After receiving her degree, she first worked as a Registered Nurse for Mount Vernon and Phelps Memorial Hospitals prior to a career of more than 30 years with Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Ossining, NY. Jean retired in 1993.
On February 28, 1954, she married George J. Potanovic, Sr. at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers. In 1962, the couple moved to Ossining, NY, where Jean was a member of St. Augustine Parish and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps. After 67 years of marriage, Jean was predeceased by George on November 17, 2021.
She was an active parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill, where she enjoyed singing in the choir up until a few months ago. An avid golfer, Jean was a longtime member of the Southern Dutchess Country Club in Beacon until 2019. She also enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles, listening to country music on CD, playing video games on her iPad and enjoying her daily "happy hour" while watching Judge Judy on TV - and planning her next trip to the nearby casinos to try her luck on the slot machines! More than anything else, Jean cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, George J. Potanovic, Jr. & his wife Joanne of Stony Point, NY; her son, Steven Potanovic of West Palm Beach, FL; her daughter, Christine Potanovic of Fishkill, NY; her grandchildren: Owen Roberts & his wife Samantha Henry, Dylan Roberts, Allison Potanovic, and Ashley Potanovic; her siblings: Lynn Notarpole, Barbara Gordich, and John Jenkofsky; as well as several nieces & nephews along with their families and many other loving relatives & friends.
