Schlegel
May 15, 1932 – April 2, 2026
Jean Schlegel (née Kuchenmeister) passed away on April 2, 2026 after a short illness at the age of 93. Born May 15, 1932, Jean was the eighth child of Charles and Maude (Oakley) Kuchenmeister. Raised in Yorktown Heights, she moved to Billings, New York with her parents in 1945 and graduated from Millbrook High School in 1950. She attended the Edgewood Park School in Briarcliff Manor for post high school education. In 1953 she married Lawrence Schlegel, who predeceased in 1983. They raised their three children in their home in Hopewell Junction, New York.
She is survived by her sons, Lawrence Jr. (Debbie) and Gregory Schlegel. Her daughter, Diane Lomoriello, predeceased her in 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Also surviving are her two granddaughters, Jordan and Lorna, and two grandsons, John and Jason. Jean was also predeceased by her parents and siblings: Alvah, Theodore, Mary Jane, Charles Jr, Ida Mae, Robert, Fred, and Andrew. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, and dear friends Theresa Venezia and Johanna Ringwood.
Jean, also known affectionately as Bagel and Cookie, was an avid bowler, participating in numerous tournaments and was on several leagues throughout Dutchess County. She also worked at Fishkill Bowling Lanes for many years. The next time you hear thunder, be assured she's bowling with the angels.
There will be no calling hours, as per the wishes of Jean. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday April 21, 2026 at 11am at St. Denis Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home Inc.
Donations may be made to the SPCA or animal shelter of choice.
