Obituary

HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Jill A. Nelson, 78, an area resident since 2004, died on January 3, 2026 at the Taconic at Hopewell surrounded by her family. She previously lived in Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Born on October 16,1947 in Brooklyn, Jill was the daughter of the late Cole and Dorothy (Jandro) Doty.

On February 20, 1971, Jill married Warren S. Nelson who survives at home after 54 years of marriage. She is also survived by her children and their spouses, Kristy and Brian Horos of Hopewell Junction and Keith and Dorene Nelson of Hopewell Junction; and her grandchildren, Cole, Kari, Kaleigh, Emma, Aidan, and Jenna.

Jill was a preschool teacher at her childhood parish of Zion Lutheran Church in Brooklyn. She also taught Sunday School at the same parish. Jill was active in her kids' education and went on to become PTA president at both the elementary and high school. When her children were old enough, Jill returned to the workforce and became a kindergarten paraprofessional at PS 170 in Brooklyn. Jill enjoyed doing crafts and was skilled at sewing, often making clothing for her family. She loved camping with her husband during the summer months. Jill enjoyed spending time with her family especially her beloved grandchildren. In addition, she liked playing Mahjong and other games on her computer. Her favorite flower was the forsythia, also known as Brooklyn's flower.

Visitation will be held at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Saturday, January 17th from 2:30 - 5: 30pm with a memorial service at 5pm .
