Joan Alpers, 98, died on October 26, 2023 at the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose surrounded by her family. She died two days shy of her 99th birthday.
Born in Millom, Cumberia, England on October 28, 1924, she was one of nine children of the late John and Agnes (Kellet) Shelton. Joan had been employed by Guideposts and Reader's Digest in Pleasantville.
Joan had been a resident of the New York State Veterans Home for ten years. She had previously resided in Ocala, Florida for 25 years. She loved trips to the casino and her lottery scratch off tickets. She also enjoyed travelling, especially to England and the Rockies. She also looked forward to playing on the bowling league with her husband.
On July 14, 1946, Joan married Charles Russell Alpers who predeceased her on June 3, 2014. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Nancy and Tim Bila, Barry and Corinne Alpers, Brian and Lucille Alpers; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3:30 -7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 10am at the funeral home followed by entombment in Ferncliff Cemetery.
