SEBASTIAN, FL – Joan Virginia Sheehan, 87, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.
A resident of Sebastian, FL since 2017, she had previously resided in Vero Beach, FL, Tampa, FL, Raleigh, NC, and Fishkill, NY.
Daughter of the late Clarence and Florence (Kilcline) Smith, she was born in Englewood, NJ on June 9, 1936. In 1953, Joan graduated from Mount Saint Mary High School in Newburgh, NY.
On May 28, 1955, she married Robert W. Sheehan at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon, NY. Robert predeceased Joan on January 13, 2021.
Her primary role was that of homemaker, but she also worked for many years at Publix stores in Florida, retiring in 2014. Joan was a parishioner of St. Sebastian Church in Sebastian, FL. Her hobbies included doing crossword puzzles, gardening, reading, and watching PGA Golf and Hallmark movies. She loved making family photo albums and always endeavored to stay in touch with old friends.
Survivors include her son Robert & his wife Maureen of Sebastian, FL; her son Kevin & his husband Thom of Delray Beach, FL; her son Timothy and his wife Kimberly of White Plains, NY; her daughter Dianne & her husband Ken Lancaster of Raleigh, NC; her son David & his wife Michelle of Acworth, GA; her grandchildren: Kathryn, Kevin (Jamie), Stephanie, Eva, and Daniel; in addition to many other relatives & friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was also preceded in death by her brother Donald as well as her sister Claire Mellert.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 28 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon, NY. Interment will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 325 Washington Avenue, Beacon, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in honor of her late husband Robert and daughter-in-law Maureen to either the Alzheimer's Association of America (act.alz.org/donate) or Friends after Diagnosis (friendsafterdiagnosis.com).
