MAHOPAC – João deMelo, 82, died peacefully on April 11, 2022.
Born on June 24, 1939 in Portugal, he was the son of João and Maria (Alves) deMelo. He served in the Portuguese military and in 1966, he immigrated to the United States. João was employed as a foreman with Danella Construction in Westchester County and was a member of Local #60.
João was active in the Portuguese - American communities, and the Portuguese Clubs in Mount Vernon and New Rochelle. He loved being outdoors, spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed caring for animals. João was an avid soccer fan, especially of the Portuguese National Team and his home town team GD Chaves.
On February 12, 1967 in Portugal, João married the love of his life, Luisa Esteves, who survives at home. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Gilberto and Lisa DeMelo, and Melissa and Manuel Fernandez; his grandchildren, Matthew John DeMelo, Manuel Antonio Fernandez, John Fernandez and Leila Fernandez; his siblings, Alice Soares, Licinio DeMelo and his wife Deanna, Elza DeMelo and her husband Jose, and Teresa deCarvalho and her husband Francisco; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his siblings, Nelson DeMelo, Celeste Alves and Mario DeMelo.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday at 11:30am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
