Gilli
October 1, 1958 – November 2, 2025
John Rudolplh Gilli, Jr., 67, a resident of Oxford since 2003 and formerly of Claverack and Hopewell Junction, died on November 2, 2025 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
Born in Poughkeepsie on October 1, 1958, he was the son of the late John and Martha (Nicholson) Gilli. John was the owner and operator of Junior's Service Center in Salt Point until 1991, and then worked at Hudson Armored Car in Highland, and Hyatt's Garage in Hopewell Jct. until his retirement in 1997
John was a parishioner of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. An avid hunter and fisherman, John was mechanically inclined and loved fixing machinery from cars to tractors. He also enjoyed working with his hands - building decks and repairing things for his family, friends and neighbors. John was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand, but more than anything he cherished spending time with his family and especially his granddaughters.
On June 27, 1976 in Hopewell Junction, John married Elaine Popkin who survives at home. He is also survived by his sons, John Gilli, III of Hyde Park, James Gilli and his girlfriend Michelle Curry of Hopewell Junction, Joseph Gilli and his wife Jennifer of Catskill, and Jeremy Gilli and his girlfriend Jessica Baade of Kingston; his granddaughters, Lee Ann, Savannah, Adelyn, Elora, and Jayden; his great-granddaughter, Brynleigh; his sisters, Sandra Katalina and her husband Michael, Donna Hedges and her husband Scott; his aunt, Betty Jones and her husband James; his brother-in-law, William Griffin; his best friend, Walter Hollings; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his twin brother, James Gilli; and his sister, Joann Griffin.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 14, from 4-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, November 15, at 10am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in John's name to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
