John H. Hartung, 80, an area resident for 38 years and formerly of Yonkers, died on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at his home following a long illness.
He was born on April 14, 1930 in Germany, the son of Wilhelm and Charlotte Blumenthal Hartung. He came to the United States in September 1949 and served in the US Army as a Private First Class during the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service.
John was employed as a Claims Agent for the Social Security Administration in Poughkeepsie for 16 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the VFW in Poughkeepsie, the Wappinger Seniors, Mid Hudson Photo Club, Dutchess County Pistol Association and Lifesaving Corps in Yonkers. He enjoyed painting, photography, listening to jazz, hunting, fishing, carpentry and flying single engine planes.
On June 18, 1955 at St. Anne's Church in Yonkers, John married Jacqueline Huen who survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Keith Robert Hartung and his wife Sharon of Currie, NC, JoAnn Layton and her husband Ronald of Highland and June Weldon and her boyfriend Steven Thompson of Wappingers Falls; his grandchildren, Timothy, Ronald, James, Melissa, Paul and Jaime; his great-granddaughter, Robyn; his sisters, Eva Maria Fuessel and her husband Zigfreid of Germany and Renate Kary and her husband Peter of Germany; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great, great-nieces and great, great-nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction with the funeral service at 3:00 p.m.
