John Ifkovits, 65, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1972 and formerly of the Bronx, died on Friday, January 21, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with melanoma and pulmonary fibrosis.
Born in New York City on March 23, 1945, he was the son of Edward and Stephanie Serencsis Ifkovits. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. John was employed by Con Edison at Indian Point for 37 years and then by Entergy for 3 years until his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction and a member of St. Mary's Council #4065 Knights of Columbus and the Cold Spring Boat Club. An avid golfer, he proudly had two holes in one.
On July 6, 1968 at St. Francis Xavier Church in the Bronx, John married Tina Malenda who survives at home. He is also survived by his son, John J. Ifkovits and his wife Dawn of New Paltz; his daughter, Melissa Ann Taiani and her husband Michael of Fishkill; his twin grandsons, Jack and Aidan Ifkovits; his brother, Edward Ifkovits of New Fairfield, CT; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 5 to 9 pm and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30a.m. at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
