FISHKILL - John P. McGinnis, 86, passed away on April 22, 2026. He was 86.

Born on May 9, 1939 in Attica, John was the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Fee) McGinnis. On September 2, 1967 at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown, he married Mary (Downey) McGinnis. The love of his life predeceased him in 2019 after 52 years of marriage.

John proudly served as a member of the 101st Airborne of the US Army. Following his military service, he continued his career in public service within the New York State correctional system, where he worked at Sing Sing Correctional Facility before retiring as the Superintendent from Downstate Correctional Facility.

He is survived by his daughter, Eve Kunkel and her husband Ed; his grandsons, Logan, Sean and Tristan; his siblings, Frances Henneberg and her husband Roy and Michael McGinnis; his brother-in-law, Peter Downey, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, John was also predeceased by his daughter, Marnie McGinnis in 2005; and his siblings, Pat, Mary, and James.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, April 26th from 3 - 6 pm at McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, April 27th at 10:30 am at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill.
