HOPEWELL JUNCTION - John J. Oliva, 87, an area resident since 1975, died peacefully surrounded by his family on July 4, 2026 at the Hudson Valley Hospice House. He previously lived in the Bronx.

Born on June 9, 1939 in the Bronx, John was the son of the late John and Anne (Longo) Oliva. A proud union member, he belonged to Teamsters Local # 807 and Teamsters Local #553. He then enjoyed working for Arlington School District for 20 years.

An avid sports enthusiast, John was a notorious fan of the Giants and Mets. For more than 30 years, he proudly served as a member of the Mid-Hudson Valley Umpires Association, officiating countless baseball games in Dutchess County. He also refereed CYO basketball and John Jay High School basketball games.

John was a parishioner at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction. As a history buff, he especially loved ancient Roman History. He was also a steadfast supporter of President Donald Trump.

On September 22, 1962 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Bronx, John married Celestina "Cecilia" (Trezza) Oliva who survives at home after 63 years of marriage. He is also survived by his children, Linda Panarello of Hopewell Junction and John Oliva of Fishkill; his grandchildren, Louis and Christene Panarello, Gina Marie and William Laham, Alexis and Anthony Vinciguerra, Vincent Oliva, Taylor Oliva, and Adriana Oliva; his great-grandchildren Ella, Bryson, Lyle, Luca, Coralee, Clemente, Canon, and Beckham; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was also predeceased by his brother, Douglas Mikey" Oliva.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 7th from 3 -7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 8th at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
