John R. Purdy, of Hopewell Junction, died suddenly on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born in Newburgh on May 31, 1939 and raised in Yonkers, he was the son of Jesse and Margaret Haberle Purdy. John proudly served our country in the US Navy and was employed as a computer programmer for IBM in Poughkeepsie for 35 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the Tuesday Night Men's Club and the Chess Club, and he loved antique cars.
On May 12, 1996 in Pawling, John married Julie Pelton who survives at home. He is also survived by his children, John Jesse Purdy and his wife Janine of Elmira, Mary Anne Elmore and her husband Eric of Alexandria, VA, William George Purdy and his wife Mary of Bethlehem, PA; his grandchildren, JoAnn, Sahri, Justin, Jessica, Ryan, Cassie, Lilian, Alex, Catherine and Abigail; his great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Jonathan, Sahiba, Alyssa, Mya, Nicole, Heighley and Jade; and his former wife, Margaret Nebinger.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
