Wappingers Falls – Joseph James "Captain Joe" Guarino, 86, died on December 30, 2020 at Mid Hudson Regional Hospital.
Joe was born on September 2, 1934, in New York City, the son of James and Carmela (DeLuca) Guarino. Joe had a career at IBM as a Quality Engineer in Poughkeepsie and San Jose. After retirement from IBM in 1991, he then worked as the Harbor Master for the Brass Anchor Marina in Hyde Park.
He proudly served our country in the US Navy, which began a lifelong love of anything nautical. Captain Joe lived on his boat The Aquaduck for 36 years, traveling up and down the East Coast every summer while he was living in Florida. On two occasions, he solo navigated the Great Loop consisting of the Intracoastal Waterway, the Hudson River, the Erie Canal, the Great Lakes, and then down the Mississippi River. He was a member of Manny Bacon Post #1758, American Legion. Captain Joe's other great passion was researching his genealogy, even publishing the best-seller “The Guarino Family, A Twentieth-Century Journey - Palermo to New York”. He especially loved visiting with his extended family, showing off his "Pride and Joy", sharing stories and entertaining everyone with his endless repertoire of jokes.
Captain Joe is survived by his children, Donna Garrison and her husband Pete, Theresa Cuchelo and her husband Eric, and Vincent Guarino and his companion Linda Kernochan; his grandchildren, Jessica Hartrum, CJ Garrison, Sarah Guarino and Melissa Guarino; his great-grandson, Dylan Hartrum; his brother, Frank Guarino and his wife Joanne; his sister AnnMarie Blackman and her husband Ron; and his nieces and nephews, Dawn Perri, Michael Rende, Caprice, Desiree, Frank John and Joseph Guarino.
